Star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has publicly refuted chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s comments about his fitness, delivering a compelling performance in the Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Uttarakhand.
This spirited exchange follows Shami’s controversial exclusion from India’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the upcoming series against Australia, a decision that has sparked significant debate.
Addressing reporters at Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens after the third day of play, a defiant Shami stated, “Let him say whatever he wants. You have seen how I bowled. It is all in front of your eyes.”
Earlier on Friday, Agarkar had elaborated on the selection committee’s position, indicating that Shami would be considered for selection once he met the required fitness benchmarks. “If Shami were here, I would give him an answer. If he is fit, why would we not have a bowler like Shami?” Agarkar queried.
Agarkar further explained, “I have had multiple chats with him. Over the last six to eight months, what we have found out is that he was not fit. If he stays fit over the next few months, the story might be different, but he was not fit to be picked for the England tour.”
However, Shami’s recent exploits in the Ranji Trophy opener for Bengal strongly challenge this narrative. He demonstrated exceptional form, dismantling Uttarakhand’s first innings by snatching three crucial wickets in a single over, thereby securing a vital first-innings lead for his team.
His dominance continued into Uttarakhand’s second innings, where he picked up an additional four wickets, including the prized scalps of captain Kunal Chandela (who made 72 runs), Abhay Negi, Janmejay Joshi, and Rajan Kumar.
This stellar on-field display directly contradicts the chief selector’s assertion regarding Shami’s fitness, making a strong case for his inclusion in future squads. Prior to this match, Shami had already voiced his disagreement with the BCCI selectors, arguing that his consistent participation in four-day domestic matches was clear proof of his fitness.
