India’s rising cricket star Abhishek Sharma recently delivered a sensational performance against Pakistan in the Asia Cup Super 4s. His blistering knock of 74 runs from just 39 balls, which included six fours and five sixes, was instrumental in guiding India to a comfortable six-wicket victory with seven balls to spare.
Following this match-winning display, former India opener Virender Sehwag offered some invaluable advice to the young batsman. In a video that quickly gained traction online, Sehwag emphasized the crucial importance of converting strong starts into significant scores. He urged Abhishek to aim for centuries whenever he finds himself in good form at the crease, recalling similar wisdom he himself received from the legendary Sunil Gavaskar.
Gavaskar’s original advice to Sehwag was to prevent the lingering regret of missing out on hundreds during his career. Sehwag reiterated this sentiment to Abhishek: “Many congratulations. I would say whenever you reach seventy, don’t miss out on converting it into a hundred. These opportunities don’t come again and again. On the day that it’s your day, when you’re batting well, try to finish unbeaten. That’s always better. Keep that in mind.”
The conversation took a lighthearted turn when presenter Gaurav Kapur jokingly suggested that this advice sounded exactly like something Abhishek’s mentor, Yuvraj Singh, would offer. Abhishek confirmed this with a smile, sharing Yuvraj’s philosophy: “That’s 100 percent certain. He always says, after hitting a six, give the other guy a chance to hit too. I’m working on that.”
Abhishek has already demonstrated his immense talent by scoring two T20I hundreds, rapidly establishing himself as a formidable force in the shortest format of the game. India is now preparing for their next Super 4s encounter against Bangladesh on September 24, with high hopes that Abhishek will continue his exceptional form.
