A day after India clinched the Asia Cup title by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in a nail-biting final, mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy captured attention with his unique ‘coffee cup’ celebration. This unconventional gesture came about because the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief, Mohsin Naqvi, reportedly walked away with the Asia Cup trophy, leaving the Indian team unable to formally receive it.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over Pakistan in the final match held in Dubai.
During an appearance on the third episode of ‘Breakfast With Champion,’ Varun Chakravarthy openly discussed the story behind his memorable ‘cup’ celebration following their win against Pakistan.
“I knew we were destined to win,” Chakravarthy stated confidently. “After our second victory against them, I was certain that if we met in the finals, we would emerge victorious.”
The spinner revealed his initial, more ambitious plan: he had intended to sleep with the actual trophy and capture a photograph with it. However, since the team couldn’t get their hands on the coveted hardware, he improvised by posing with a simple coffee mug instead.
“I had everything planned out – imagining myself sleeping next to the cup for a photo. But after the match, there was no trophy. Just a coffee cup. So, I just went with that,” he explained with a chuckle.
Following the momentous win, Varun took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his patriotic sentiments, posting, “Akkha duniya ek taraf, aur mere India ek taraf. Jai Hind!” (The whole world on one side, and my India on the other. Hail India!)
Chakravarthy asserted that the absence of the physical trophy did not diminish their achievement or their status as champions. “It didn’t matter that we didn’t lift the trophy. We are the number one team in the world. (The Cup can be taken away) but we are still champions,” he declared.
