The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an official medical update concerning India’s One Day International vice-captain, Shreyas Iyer. The cricketer has sustained a laceration injury to his spleen, confirmed after a significant fall during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025.
Iyer initially injured his left lower rib cage while fielding, moments after completing an impressive catch to dismiss Alex Carey. Following this, he experienced discomfort in the dressing room and was immediately transported to a Sydney hospital for a thorough medical assessment.
According to the BCCI’s statement, subsequent scans revealed the spleen laceration. Thankfully, Iyer is reported to be medically stable, undergoing treatment, and making good progress in his recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in close collaboration with specialists in both Sydney and India, is diligently overseeing his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain with Shreyas in Sydney to monitor his day-to-day progress and recovery.
This injury, which was initially perceived as a simple rib impact, turned out to be far more serious upon detailed medical examination. Iyer is expected to remain in Sydney for continuous observation as the medical teams from both countries coordinate his recovery plan. The timeline for his return to play will depend entirely on his progress over the coming days.
