India’s T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, recently shared an update on Shreyas Iyer’s unusual injury and subsequent hospitalization in Sydney. “He’s recovering well, and his responses on the phone indicate he’s doing absolutely fine,” Suryakumar stated ahead of the five-match T20I series against Australia. He added, “It’s unfortunate what happened, but doctors are providing excellent care. He’ll be monitored for a few more days, but there’s no need for serious concern.”
Iyer was hospitalized after sustaining a spleen injury during a diving catch in the third ODI against Australia. He was attempting to dismiss Alex Carey from Harshit Rana’s bowling when he landed awkwardly on his ribs and elbows.

After making the catch, Iyer was clearly in significant pain and needed to be helped off the field by medical personnel, holding his ribs.
The BCCI released a statement confirming, “Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25, 2025. He was immediately taken to the hospital for thorough evaluation.” The statement further detailed, “Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is currently undergoing treatment, is medically stable, and showing good signs of recovery.” The BCCI Medical Team, in collaboration with specialists in both Sydney and India, is closely tracking his condition. An Indian team doctor will stay with Shreyas in Sydney to monitor his daily progress.
Before this unfortunate event, Iyer had been performing well in the ODI series against Australia. He notably scored 61 runs off 77 balls in the second Adelaide ODI, contributing to a century partnership with Rohit Sharma. Overall, he scored 72 runs in two matches during the series.
This injury now raises concerns about his availability for the upcoming One-Day Internationals against South Africa, which are set to commence on November 30th. Throughout 2025, Iyer has been a vital component of India’s middle order, often playing alongside KL Rahul and Axar Patel. His impressive statistics for the year include 496 runs from 11 matches, boasting an average of 49.60 and a strike rate of 89.53. This tally features five half-centuries, with his highest score being 79. His strong form was also evident in the ICC Champions Trophy, where he emerged as India’s leading run-scorer with 243 runs in five innings at an average of 48.60, including two fifties, making him the tournament’s second-highest run-getter overall.
