India’s thrilling Asia Cup 2025 triumph brought many stories to light, and one of the most compelling was that of Sanju Samson. In a candid interview, Suryakumar Yadav revealed the behind-the-scenes discussions and guidance that helped shape Samson’s crucial role. With the arrival of talented players like Shubman Gill and Jitesh Sharma, many initially questioned Samson’s place in the playing eleven, and even his opening slot seemed under threat.
‘Everyone thought that with Shubman and Jitesh coming into the team, Sanju might not open or even get his place,’ Suryakumar explained. ‘But in my mind, it never crossed that he wouldn’t play.’
He recounted a pivotal practice session where he and Gautam Gambhir discussed Samson. Gautam, recognizing Samson’s strong performances in recent T20 matches, offered clear advice. ‘We just told him that his batting position might change and he may get fewer balls, but his impact has to remain,’ Surya shared. ‘Whenever he comes out to bat, he should think about how to make the most of it for the team.’
Sanju Samson wholeheartedly embraced this challenge, proving his immense worth throughout the tournament. He emerged as India’s third-highest run-scorer in the Asia Cup, trailing only Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, a testament to his adaptability and consistent impact. His stellar performances didn’t go unnoticed, earning him the prestigious CEAT T20 Batter of the Year award.
Speaking at the CEAT Awards, Sanju reflected on his emotional journey in international cricket. He spoke of a decade of silent, patient dedication, focusing on his mental and physical game despite numerous obstacles and external pressures. ‘After a long wait of 10 years, when I got the opportunity, I was able to score three match-winning centuries in the span of five T20 international matches,’ he proudly stated.
Samson further emphasized his profound commitment to representing India. ‘When you wear that Indian jersey, I think you can’t say no to anything. I have worked very hard to wear the jersey and, more importantly, to stay in that dressing room,’ he asserted. ‘I’ll take great pride in doing a job for my country. So even if they want to bat me at number nine or bowl some left-hand spin, I’m happy to do that as well.’
