In a candid revelation, Chris Broad, father of the renowned England fast bowler Stuart Broad, recounted an amusing incident where his son disposed of a thoughtful Christmas present: a signed jersey from former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.
The gift, intended as a light-hearted gesture, came years after the infamous 2007 T20 World Cup clash where Yuvraj Singh hammered six consecutive sixes off Stuart Broad’s bowling. It was a moment etched into cricketing history, particularly painful for the young English paceman.
“Stuart didn’t exactly appreciate my gesture after that unforgettable over,” Chris Broad shared with Telegraph.co.uk. “I managed to get Yuvraj to sign an Indian shirt and thought it would make a unique Christmas present for Stuart. However, when he opened it, saw the jersey, he simply tossed it into the bin!”
Chris humorously added, “I believe he experienced a significant lapse in his sense of humor that day.”
The former England Ashes hero also recalled another memorable moment involving his son, this time from his role as a match referee. He described how Stuart once threatened legal action after being fined for swearing during a game – a fine imposed by his own father.
“We had the recording to prove it, and there was no doubt about the offense,” Chris explained. “But Stuart was adamant, saying, ‘No, no, no, I’m going to get my lawyers involved. This is ridiculous.’ I tried to calm him, telling him to just sign the slip for 15 percent of his match fee.”
“He insisted, ‘No, no, I’m not going to do it.’ He felt that because I was his father, I should be able to intervene and change the ruling, instead of acting purely as a match referee. But rules are rules,” Chris stated. “Eventually, he accepted the penalty, but bless him, he still brings it up. I suppose he’ll eventually get over it… one day.”
