The highly anticipated Ashes series between Australia and England is just around the corner, and the pre-series banter is already heating up. Australian veteran batsman Steve Smith, however, chose a humorous approach when addressing recent comments from former England pacer Stuart Broad. Broad had playfully suggested that Australia’s current squad might be their “worst team since 2010.”
“It’s our worst team, obviously, since 2010, that’s the mail anyway,” Smith chuckled, quoting Broad’s remarks. Despite the jabs, Smith appeared unfazed, signaling a calm and focused Australian team.
Smith emphasized his preference to concentrate on the game itself, rather than engaging in verbal sparring. “There’s obviously been the back and forth and plenty of banter, which I don’t like to really get involved in,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to cricket.
Broad’s initial comments were made on his “For The Love Of Cricket” podcast, where he declared the current Australian team as their “worst since 2010” and, conversely, hailed England’s squad as their “best since 2010.” This was a clear reference to England’s last Ashes victory on Australian soil during the 2010–11 series.
However, Smith offered a more balanced perspective on both teams’ recent performances. “It’s going to be a wonderful series. I think England are a really good side at the moment,” he conceded.
He also proudly pointed to Australia’s consistent track record in Test cricket over the last few years, including reaching two Test Championship finals. “We’ve been a really good side over the last three or four years in particular, making two Test Championship finals,” Smith added, underscoring his team’s strong form.
As both cricketing nations prepare for another thrilling chapter in their storied rivalry, Smith’s composed and forward-looking comments capture Australia’s determination as they head into the first Test at Perth. “It’s going to be exciting. Can’t wait,” he concluded, sending a clear message of readiness for the battle ahead.
