The cricketing world is abuzz with anticipation as star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is reportedly set to make his much-awaited return to competitive cricket. Sources indicate he could be back in action during the Ranji Trophy by the end of October. His journey back to the pitch hinges on a crucial assessment of his right foot by the BCCI’s expert medical team at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) this upcoming week.
There’s a strong possibility that Pant will receive the coveted medical clearance as early as October 10th. His recovery has been a demanding and extensive process, and the BCCI medical team is exercising extreme caution, ensuring no stone is left unturned in his rehabilitation.
Adding to the excitement, Pant himself has expressed his strong desire to play for his home state, Delhi, in the Ranji Trophy. He’s reportedly informed Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley of his availability for matches commencing October 25th, pending, of course, the final fitness nod and formal clearance from the BCCI’s medical panel.

Pant’s absence has been keenly felt, particularly during the ongoing Test series against West Indies and the upcoming limited-overs tour of Australia. His sidelining stemmed from a fractured right foot, an unfortunate injury sustained during the fourth Test against England in Manchester back in late July. What was initially expected to be a six-week recovery tragically worsened when the metatarsal bone in his right foot fractured due to the immense pressure placed on it when he bravely stepped out to bat the very next day after the initial incident.
Encouragingly, Pant has demonstrated exceptional progress in his recovery over the past three weeks, a testament to his dedication and hard work.
While he hasn’t yet confirmed a specific date for joining the Delhi camp, Pant awaits the final clearance from the CoE. Participating in the first-round Ranji Trophy match from October 15th seems ambitious given the timeline. Should he be declared fit, it’s widely anticipated that he will step back into a leadership role, likely captaining the Delhi squad.
With India slated to host South Africa for a two-Test series starting November 14th, Pant’s Ranji Trophy appearances will serve as crucial match practice. He might participate in up to two Ranji games leading up to November 5th. The exact number of matches he plays will ultimately hinge on his CoE clearance and his readiness for the significant South Africa series.
