Indian skipper Shubman Gill recently highlighted the critical importance of carefully managing senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. With both veterans now concentrating on a single format, Gill emphasized the necessity of ensuring they get sufficient game time to stay in prime condition.
The statement came after Kohli and Rohit demonstrated their enduring class, each scoring magnificent unbeaten innings of 74 and 121 respectively, powering India to a commanding nine-wicket victory over Australia in a decisive ODI match. (Image: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli)
Addressing concerns about the extended break before India’s next ODI challenges against South Africa and New Zealand, Gill acknowledged that detailed discussions are still pending. He noted, ‘We haven’t talked about it yet. But I think once the South Africa ODI series concludes on December 6th, there will be a significant gap in international cricket before the New Zealand ODI series begins on January 11th, 2026. At that point, we will strategize on how to keep our key players engaged and sharp. A decision will then be made regarding their preparation and schedules.’

With just six One-Day Internationals remaining for the season—three against South Africa and three against New Zealand—the task of providing ample match practice to these stalwarts presents a clear challenge for the team management.
For the young skipper, witnessing the seasoned 38-year-old Rohit and 36-year-old Kohli expertly steer a chase to completion was a sheer delight. Gill remarked, ‘They’ve consistently delivered such performances for the past 15 years. It’s truly a treat to watch them play with such conviction and guide the team to victory, remaining unbeaten.’
He further expressed his satisfaction, stating, ‘As a captain, observing from the sidelines and seeing the two most experienced players on the team take charge and lead us to success is an incredibly rewarding feeling.’
Gill didn’t shy away from praising their technical mastery. ‘As I mentioned,’ he elaborated, ‘it’s simply mesmerizing to watch them bat with such fluency. The sight of the ball flying off their bats, and the distinct sound it makes, clearly indicates the exceptional form both players are currently enjoying.’
He concluded by commending their exemplary approach to closing out matches, a trait often discussed in team strategy sessions. ‘Observing them take control and guide the team to victory is exactly what we emphasize in our meetings. They truly embody what we preach, and that’s an immense advantage for us.’
