Skipper Shubman Gill emphasized the need for careful management of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, now playing only one format, to ensure they maintain optimal game time and rhythm. He lauded their match-winning performances, calling their clinical chase “a treat to watch” and a “great bonus” for the team, highlighting their technical brilliance and ability to finish games.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will require meticulous management moving forward, as they now primarily feature in only one format of the game. Captain Shubman Gill highlighted on Saturday the critical importance of ensuring consistent game time for these two white-ball legends to maintain their competitive edge.
Kohli and Rohit wrapped up the recent ODI series on a high note, scoring an unbeaten 74 and 121 runs respectively. Their stellar performances guided India to a commanding nine-wicket victory in what was considered a dead rubber against Australia.
When questioned about the upcoming break before the next series against South Africa and then New Zealand, Gill acknowledged that no definitive discussions have taken place yet. “We haven’t talked about it yet. But I think once the South Africa ODI series concludes (on December 6), there will be a period without international cricket before the New Zealand ODI series (January 11, 2026). So, I believe a decision will then be made on how to keep the players engaged and in form during this interim,” he explained.
With only six more One Day Internationals scheduled for the season—three against South Africa and three against New Zealand—providing sufficient match practice to key players presents a significant challenge.
For the young skipper, witnessing the 38-year-old Rohit and 36-year-old Kohli effortlessly conclude a clinical chase was an absolute delight. “They’ve been consistently performing at this level for the past 15 years. To be able to watch them play with such mastery and lead the team to an unbeaten victory is truly a treat to behold,” Gill remarked.
He further added, “As a captain, when you observe from the sidelines and see the match unfold, it brings immense satisfaction that the two most senior players in the team are not only participating but are also steering the team to success.”
Gill also underscored the exceptional technical prowess of the veteran duo. “I think, as I mentioned, it’s a sheer pleasure to watch both of them, especially when they are batting so fluently. The sight of the ball flying off their bats and the distinct sound it makes instantly tell you they are in incredible form,” he stated.
He concluded by commending their exemplary approach to finishing games. “Watching them from the outside, taking the team across the finish line, is something we frequently discuss in team meetings. They are truly embodying what we preach, and that is a tremendous advantage for us.”
