India’s captain, Shubman Gill, sees a bright future for young pacer Harshit Rana, believing he has the potential to become a pivotal bowling all-rounder for the team. Gill’s remarks come after Rana’s standout performance in the third One Day International against Australia, where the Delhi bowler secured a career-best four wickets, leading India to a convincing nine-wicket victory in Sydney.
During the post-match press conference, Gill emphasized the strategic importance of a lower-order batsman who can contribute vital runs. “With the No. 8 position, if a batsman can make 20-25 runs there, which we have confidence that Harshit can do it, then it becomes a very important position,” Gill stated. Rana had previously showcased his batting prowess with a valuable 24 runs in the second ODI in Adelaide.
Gill further elaborated on Rana’s unique attributes, describing him as a tall, fast bowler capable of consistently hitting speeds of 140 km/h and above. He noted that such bowlers are particularly valuable on challenging pitches, like those expected in South Africa. “There are very few fast bowlers who are tall, who can bowl 140-plus. So if we are looking at South Africa, on such wickets, such bowlers become very important,” Gill explained. India’s upcoming ODI series against South Africa is scheduled to begin on November 30, with matches slated for Ranchi, Raipur, and Vishakhapatnam.
The skipper also lauded India’s spin attack for their initial efforts in building pressure on the Australian batsmen, which set the stage for Rana’s impactful spell. “Australia got a very good start but the way our spinners bowled first, created pressure, and then Harshit bowled powerfully (effort balls) and I think he got a good reward for that,” Gill added.
Despite not registering a half-century himself during the series, Gill expressed confidence in his own batting form, downplaying any concerns. “In the first match, I got out down-the-leg side. So, I’m not thinking too much about my batting. Sometimes, it happens. You obviously want to perform for the team in every match, but I’m not too worried about my performance,” he reassured.
Rana’s impressive overall performance, combining his wicket-taking ability with his contributions with the bat, positions him as a strong contender for a consistent role at number eight in future series. This could provide India with the crucial balance of a bowling all-rounder needed to deepen both their batting and bowling lineups.
The third ODI victory, while closing the series with a 2-1 loss for India, was a significant moment for the team, particularly with the emergence of players like Rana. He topped the series’ wicket-taking charts with six scalps. Rana, who has faced his share of online criticism and trolling, took to Instagram to share his feelings after the win: “Not just a win, a statement of unity, belief and teamwork. Eleven players. One heartbeat.” His post perfectly encapsulated his resilience and the team’s collective spirit.
