In a heartening development for Indian cricket fans, star batsman Shreyas Iyer’s family arrived in Sydney on Wednesday to be by his side. The cricketer is making a steady recovery after sustaining a severe ruptured spleen and rib cage injury during the third One-Day International against Australia.
The unfortunate incident occurred last Saturday when the 30-year-old bravely attempted a challenging running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling, resulting in a lower left rib cage injury. Iyer was immediately rushed to the hospital where the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed he had suffered internal bleeding.

Adding a personal touch, Shreyas’s sister, Shresta Iyer, shared her location as Sydney on Instagram, indicating the family’s presence to support him during this critical recovery phase.
Speaking for the first time since the injury, Iyer shared a positive update on social media: “I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful for all the kind wishes and support I’ve received — it truly means a lot to me. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts.”
India’s Twenty20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, also commented on the situation, noting that doctors and physiotherapists have described Iyer’s injury as “rare.” Yadav expressed his optimism, stating, “But rare things happen to rare talent. God is with him, and he will recover soon. We will take him along with us.”
The BCCI provided a detailed update on Tuesday, confirming that a repeat scan performed on October 28 revealed significant improvement in Shreyas’s condition. The statement clarified, “Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding on October 25 during the third ODI against Australia. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation.”
The BCCI Medical Team, in close consultation with specialists in both Sydney and India, will continue to meticulously monitor his progress as he journeys back to full fitness.
