NEW DELHI: Following Rohit Sharma’s explosive performance and India’s victory over Australia in the third One Day International, his childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, shared exciting news on Saturday. Lad disclosed that the veteran opener plans to retire from international cricket after participating in the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Rohit recently showcased his prowess by smashing his 50th international century in Sydney during the third ODI, ultimately finishing as the series’ top scorer against Australia.
During India’s pursuit of 237 runs, Rohit’s dynamic 121* runs and his crucial partnership with long-time teammate Virat Kohli captivated fans who had filled the stadium, perhaps witnessing one of their final joint appearances on Australian soil.
“The way Rohit batted today and how he contributed to India’s win—it felt great to watch today’s match. He will play the 2027 ODI World Cup and retire after that,” Dinesh Lad stated.
Addressing Virat Kohli’s performance, who made a strong comeback with an unbeaten 74* after consecutive ducks in Perth and Adelaide, Lad remarked on the frequent misunderstandings surrounding him.
“There are misunderstandings about Virat everyday. He is someone who can thrive anytime and anywhere. The way he played today, it feels good. Sachin had said in a function way back that Rohit and Virat would be the players who would break his records. Both getting closer to his records feels really good,” he added.
Rohit’s stellar performance earned him both ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series’ awards, having accumulated 202 runs throughout the series, including one century and a half-century.
After delivering an unforgettable performance that deeply moved fans at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Indian cricketing legends Rohit and Virat are now set to rejoin the squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, commencing on November 30.
The series between India and South Africa will feature three ODIs. The first match is scheduled for November 30 in Ranchi, followed by the second ODI on December 3 in Raipur, and the third and final encounter on December 6 in Visakhapatnam.
