Mumbai’s skipper, Shardul Thakur, has made a compelling case for Sarfaraz Khan’s direct inclusion in India’s Test squad, emphasizing that the dynamic batsman has repeatedly proven his mettle in high-pressure situations.
Contrary to the opinions of some experts who suggest Sarfaraz should adjust his batting position for Mumbai to enhance his prospects for national selection, Thakur sees no necessity for such a change. He highlighted Sarfaraz’s remarkable ability to produce significant scores when the team needs it most. “If you look at his big scores — the 200s and 250s — those innings have come when the team was two or three wickets down early in the innings,” Thakur explained, speaking ahead of Mumbai’s Elite Group D Ranji Trophy match against Chhattisgarh.
Thakur lauded Sarfaraz’s inherent ability to thrive under duress, stating, “To play such innings under pressure, you must have something special inside you. He never disappoints and has done it for years. Regardless of where he bats for us, I think he will deliver this season.”
Furthermore, Thakur believes that Sarfaraz has already surpassed the stage where an India ‘A’ call-up would be beneficial. He articulated that while the India ‘A’ circuit typically serves as a preparatory ground for players transitioning to international cricket, Sarfaraz’s consistent top-tier performances indicate he is ready for the highest level immediately.
“I think Sarfaraz doesn’t need an India ‘A’ game to play international cricket,” Thakur asserted. He recounted Sarfaraz’s strong performance in the Buchi Babu tournament before an injury, and his promising return during a match against Jammu & Kashmir where he was unfortunately run out. “For him, I don’t think playing for India ‘A’ is necessary. He can straightaway play a Test series.”
As Mumbai gears up for its second Ranji encounter, the team will undoubtedly look to their premier batsman to play a pivotal role, aiming to secure a dominant victory on home turf against Chhattisgarh.
