A disturbing incident unfolded at the Government Higher Secondary School in Punnamoodu, Kalliyoor, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, where nine students and a teacher were rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) for ‘inhalation injury’. The distressing event occurred after what is believed to be pepper spray was released in a classroom.
Hospital authorities confirmed that the students, who experienced dizziness and difficulty breathing, are now in stable condition. One child, particularly susceptible to respiratory issues, is receiving close monitoring in the intensive care unit. The Minister for Health has personally intervened, instructing the hospital superintendent to ensure all affected individuals receive the best possible medical care.
According to Nemom police, the incident was an accident. A student cycling to school reportedly found a pepper spray can on a two-wheeler and, driven by curiosity, brought it into the classroom. During an interval, the student sprayed it towards the floor to see what would happen. There was no intention to cause harm or any existing dispute with other students, the child clarified to the police.
Tragically, a running fan quickly dispersed the spray throughout the classroom. Students immediately felt unwell and rushed out. A teacher from a nearby classroom, who came to investigate the commotion, also began experiencing symptoms and felt ill.
Both the affected students and the teacher received initial treatment at the General Hospital before being transferred to MCH for specialized observation. Medical professionals are awaiting a chemical analysis to definitively identify the substance involved. In the interim, all affected individuals will remain under 24-hour observation, receiving supportive care until their condition can be fully reassessed.
The Thiruvananthapuram Regional Deputy Director, under the General Education department, has requested a comprehensive report from the school principal regarding the incident.
