In a moment that quickly spread joy across the cricketing world, former Indian captain Rohit Sharma gave an inspiring speech to One Day International debutant Nitish Kumar Reddy. This touching address took place during India’s first ODI against Australia at Perth’s Optus Stadium on a recent Sunday. Sharma confidently stated his belief that the 22-year-old all-rounder possesses the attitude and potential to become an “all-format great” for the Indian team.
Nitish Kumar Reddy’s journey saw him return to the Optus Stadium, the very venue where he had made his Test debut during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year, receiving his Test cap from none other than Virat Kohli. Now, eleven months later, he was making his ODI debut on the same hallowed ground.
During the special cap presentation ceremony, Rohit Sharma offered powerful words of encouragement to the young fast-bowling all-rounder, emphasizing his inherent talent and assuring him of the team’s unwavering support.
“Cap number 260, Nitish Reddy. You have got a great start to your career, and it’s only because of how you want to play the game and your attitude. I am 110 per cent sure that with that attitude, you are going to go a long way in this Indian team,” Rohit announced in a video shared by the BCCI.
He continued, “You are going to be an all-format great, which I believe thoroughly, because, like you said in your speech yesterday, you want to be everywhere, and that is where we all want you to be doing that. I am 110 per cent sure that the team will rally around you. Anything you need, anytime you need anything, everyone will be there to support you. Good luck, have a great career.”
In his maiden ODI appearance, Nitish wasted no time in showcasing his batting skills, hitting two impressive sixes during India’s innings. The match itself was frequently interrupted by rain, leading to a reduction to 26 overs per side.
India struggled to build momentum throughout their batting effort. KL Rahul managed to score 38 runs off 31 balls before his dismissal. Nitish, however, remained unbeaten with a quickfire 19 runs from just 11 deliveries, helping India reach a total of 136 for 9 wickets.
Despite Nitish’s late flurry with the bat, Australia, captained by Mitchell Marsh, ultimately secured a seven-wicket victory using the DLS method. Marsh himself played a crucial role, remaining not out on 46 runs as Australia successfully chased down the revised target with 29 balls still in hand.
