NEW DELHI: Former India captain Rohit Sharma made his first public appearance since being stripped of the ODI captaincy, and he did so in his characteristic style. Attending the 27th edition of the CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai on Tuesday, Rohit appeared visibly leaner, fitter, and more determined than ever, sending a clear message to selectors that he remains prepared for international challenges.
The veteran opener, who previously led India to two successive ICC titles – the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy earlier this year – commanded attention at the prestigious event. While receiving a special recognition award from cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, Rohit impressed both fans and experts with his revitalized energy and remarkable physical transformation.
Rohit’s fitness has frequently been a topic of discussion, with critics often scrutinizing his appearance. However, on Tuesday night, the 38-year-old was in peak form – looking trim, sharp, and confident – a powerful declaration of intent to those who had questioned his preparedness.
Having noticeably shed weight, Rohit’s transformation was evident as he warmly engaged with fans and the media. His unwavering focus, however, remained squarely on cricket. “I love playing against them. I love going to Australia. It’s a very challenging country to play cricket. People there love the game as well,” Rohit remarked about the upcoming ODI series scheduled to begin on October 19.
He further added, “Australia presents a unique challenge every time they have played against us. Having been there several times now, I understand what to expect. Hopefully, we can go there and perform as the Indian team is capable of, securing a favourable outcome.”
Despite the recent change in ODI captaincy, with Shubman Gill taking over, Rohit’s demeanor and statements exuded the confidence of a player far from finished. The seasoned cricketer, who guided India through two undefeated ICC campaigns, now sets his sights on another successful tour Down Under – one that could solidify his position in India’s long-term plans leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
