The cricket community is saddened by the news of Bernard Julien’s passing at the age of 75. The former West Indies all-rounder and hero of their 1975 World Cup victory passed away in Valsayn, Northern Trinidad.
Julien was an indispensable member of the West Indies squad that clinched their inaugural Men’s World Cup title in 1975, etching their name in cricket history.
His formidable performances during that historic tournament included outstanding bowling figures of 4 wickets for just 20 runs against Sri Lanka in the group stage, followed by another stellar effort of 4/27 against New Zealand in the semi-final.
In the thrilling final against Australia, Julien’s batting prowess shone through as he scored a valuable 26 runs off 37 balls, contributing significantly to the West Indies’ ultimate victory. He was truly a complete cricketer, showcasing exceptional left-arm seam bowling, aggressive batting, and electric fielding.
Former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd fondly remembered Julien, telling the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian: “He always gave you over 100 per cent. He never shirked his duties, and I could always rely on him with bat and ball. He gave his all every time. What a fine cricketer. We all had total respect for him. He enjoyed himself and was loved by everyone around. I remember we won the Test match at Lord’s and stood there and signed autographs for a long time. He was good for us and was held in high regard everywhere we went.”
Throughout his international career, Julien proudly represented the West Indies in 24 Test matches and 12 One-Day Internationals. In Tests, he amassed 866 runs and took 50 wickets, while in ODIs, he scored 86 runs and captured 18 wickets.
Cricket West Indies president Kishore Shallow also extended his heartfelt condolences following Julien’s demise.
In a statement from Cricket West Indies, Shallow emphasized, “As we honour Bernard Julien, we also recognise the importance of reflection and inclusion. The time has come to view that chapter of our history not through exclusion but through understanding.”
He further added, “To the family, friends, and loved ones of Bernard Julien, we extend our deepest condolences. His passing reminds us that a life devoted to purpose never truly leaves us. Cricket West Indies stands with you in this moment of loss, and we hope Bernard knew he was valued and loved by the cricketing family he helped to shape, and that he found peace knowing his contribution will always endure.”
