Rain Dominates Women’s World Cup: New Zealand vs. Pakistan Clash Abandoned in Colombo

For the fourth time in this tournament at R. Premadasa Stadium, rain played spoilsport at the Women’s World Cup. The highly anticipated match between Pakistan and New Zealand was ultimately abandoned on Saturday.

The New Zealand-Pakistan match ended without a result as rain ended up playing spoilsport.

After being asked to bat first, Pakistan struggled to build momentum, reaching 92 for five before the downpour began. The innings had previously been interrupted at 52 for three, leading to a reduction of the game to 46 overs. However, a second wave of rain brought a complete halt to play. Lightning in the vicinity forced players off the field, with match officials advising ground staff to prioritize safety.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine conveyed her frustration but maintained a forward-looking perspective. “We were in a decent position and were hoping for the rain to clear,” she stated. “This is truly disappointing, especially when you wait four years for a World Cup. It’s a real shame. Now, we must win both our remaining games.”

The ‘White Ferns’ bowlers were effective early on, with seamers Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu securing crucial breakthroughs. Spinners Amelia Kerr and Eden Carson then continued to pick up wickets. Their fielding was also exceptional; veteran Suzie Bates took a spectacular catch at mid-wicket to dismiss Muneeba Ali (22), and Carson made a full-length diving effort at point to claim Sidra Amin (9).

Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana lamented the missed opportunity. “We were aiming for around 180 runs,” she explained. “We know we have skilled spinners who could have put pressure on them.”

With the points shared, New Zealand now stands at four points, drawing level with India. However, India holds the fourth position due to a superior Net Run Rate and a game in hand. Pakistan, unfortunately, remains winless in the tournament, with three defeats and two no-results to their name.

Pakistan’s next challenge will be against South Africa in Colombo on October 21, while New Zealand is set to face India in Navi Mumbai on October 23.
