In a candid revelation, legendary Indian off-spinner R Ashwin recently addressed his unexpected absence from the ILT20 2025 auction, clarifying his decision to maintain a significant base price and outlining his exciting plans for the future of his T20 career.
The 39-year-old veteran, widely respected for his spin mastery, did not find a buyer at the auction after setting his base price at a substantial $120,000, placing him in the highest bracket. Ashwin explained his stance, stating, “That’s the price I wanted as a bare minimum, and I’m happy not to play at this stage of my career if my value isn’t met.”
He further elaborated on the circumstances, telling Cricbuzz, “I was about to pull out a few days before the auction because of the Thunder deal, but since I had already committed to the ILT20 that I would enter the auction, I honored my word. However, I did not agree to lowering my base price.”
This decision paves the way for a groundbreaking move: Ashwin will play the entire Big Bash League (BBL) 2025 season with the Sydney Thunder, from December 14 to January 25. This commitment marks him as the first high-profile Indian male cricketer to participate in the full BBL season.
Expressing his enthusiasm for this new chapter, Ashwin shared, “I have signed up with Sydney Thunder for the entire season.” He added in a statement, “Thunder were crystal clear about how they’d use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we’re fully aligned on my role. I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it’s always better when your leader shares your mindset. I can’t wait to perform for the Thunder Nation.”
Beyond the BBL, reports indicate that Ashwin is also keen to play in the upcoming Hundred tournament next season. Before these major commitments, fans can look forward to seeing Ashwin represent Team India in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament in November.
An informal poll within the original article asked readers if R Ashwin’s $120,000 base price was justified, offering options of “Yes, he’s worth it,” “No, it was too high,” and “Unsure.”
