Indian cricket sensation Shreyas Iyer has officially been discharged from a Sydney hospital following a ruptured spleen and rib cage injury. The incident occurred during the third One Day International (ODI) match against Australia in Sydney, where the 30-year-old vice-captain sustained the injury while attempting a catch off Alex Carey’s bowling.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an optimistic statement on Saturday morning, confirming, “The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today.”

Further details from the BCCI confirmed that Iyer will remain in Sydney to continue his recovery. He will only return to India once he is medically cleared for travel. Currently, Shreyas is not part of the ongoing T20I series against Australia, and his next scheduled commitment is the ODI series against South Africa, set to begin on November 30.

Prior to the official update, Iyer himself had shared encouraging news regarding his condition via his social media platforms.

Shreyas Iyer shared a message of gratitude on social media during his recovery.

“I’m currently in recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer posted on X and Instagram, reassuring his fans and the cricketing community.

The initial injury incident saw Iyer leave the field with medical assistance after attempting the difficult catch. His condition rapidly worsened, with vital parameters dropping, which necessitated immediate hospital intervention and subsequent ICU treatment. Medical examinations confirmed internal bleeding due to a lacerated spleen, leading to his admission for intensive care.

By Tuesday, the BCCI had already announced that Iyer’s condition had stabilized and he had been moved out of the intensive care unit. “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, October 28th, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery,” the BCCI statement read.

Initial estimations for his recovery period suggested a three-week timeline.

Full BCCI statement as of November 1 on Shreyas Iyer:

Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure. He has undergone appropriate medical management for the same.

He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today.

The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury. Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly.
