Indian cricket sensation Shreyas Iyer has been released from a Sydney hospital following a ruptured spleen and rib cage injury. He sustained this painful injury during the third One-Day International against Australia in Sydney while attempting a challenging catch of Alex Carey. The incident led to his immediate hospitalization and even a stint in the ICU.
“The BCCI Medical Team, collaborating with specialists in Sydney and India, is pleased with his progress, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” stated the Indian cricket board in an official announcement on Saturday morning.
The BCCI further clarified that Iyer will continue his recovery in Sydney and will only return to India once he receives medical clearance to fly. Currently, Shreyas is not participating in the ongoing T20I series against Australia, and his next scheduled appearance was for the ODIs against South Africa, set to begin on November 30.
Earlier, Iyer himself shared an update on his condition via social media, reassuring his fans:
“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer posted on X and Instagram.
The severity of the injury became evident when Iyer initially left the field with the team physio’s assistance. His condition subsequently worsened, with vital parameters dropping, requiring urgent medical intervention. Subsequent medical tests confirmed internal bleeding from a lacerated spleen, leading to his admission to the ICU for close observation.
By Tuesday, the BCCI had confirmed a stable condition for Iyer, and he was moved out of intensive care. “The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan performed on Tuesday, October 28, has revealed significant improvement, and Shreyas is well on his way to recovery,” the BCCI statement read. Initial estimations suggested a recovery period of approximately three weeks.
