Esteemed poet K.G. Sankara Pillai has been honored with the prestigious Ezhuthachhan Puraskaram for the year 2025, a significant recognition of his literary genius.
The announcement was made by Minister for Culture Saji Cherian in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, November 1, 2025, marking a celebratory moment for Malayalam literature.
This coveted prize, established by the Kerala government, is dedicated to celebrating eminent literary figures whose profound contributions have significantly enriched the Malayalam language and its literary landscape.
The distinguished jury, led by acclaimed writer and last year’s laureate N.S. Madhavan, lauded Professor Pillai as an exceptionally talented poet. They highlighted how his work has not only expanded Malayalam literature as a whole but has particularly uplifted its poetic realm.
The panel, which also included respected writers K.R. Meera and K.M. Anil, with Kerala Sahitya Akademi secretary C.P. Aboobakker serving as member secretary, unanimously recognized his impact.
Professor Pillai’s poetry is a vibrant reflection of the dynamic evolution and distinct sensitivity found in modern Malayalam verse. The jury noted that a profound poetic excellence consistently defines his creations, even as they boldly engage with contemporary societal issues.
Over a remarkable career spanning five decades, Professor Pillai has explored diverse avenues of poetic expression, leaving an indelible mark on literature. His prior accolades include the highly regarded Kerala and Central Sahitya Akademi awards.
Born to A.N. Gopala Pillai and G. Bhavani Amma in Chavara, Kollam district, in 1948, Professor Pillai pursued his education at SN College, Kollam, and the Malayalam department of the University of Kerala. Beyond his poetic achievements, he is revered as an educator, having taught and led several government colleges across the State, ultimately retiring as the respected Principal of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam.
His extensive body of work features notable collections such as Kochiyile Vrikshangal, Ammamaar, Njaanente Ethirkakshi, Sanchari Marangal, Marichavarude Veedu, Thakazhiyum Manthrika Kuthirayum, Sainikante Premalekhanangal, and the comprehensive K.G. Sankara Pillayude Kavithakal.
In addition to these, Professor Pillai’s literary excellence has been recognized with other significant honors, including the Odakkuzhal Award, Asan Puraskaram, Ulloor Puraskaram, Kamala Surayya Award, and the Pandalam Kerala Varma Award.
