Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is set to make a sensational return to the Big Bash League, joining the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming 2025-26 season. This highly anticipated comeback marks the end of an 11-year hiatus from the premier Australian T20 competition. Starc, who recently retired from T20I cricket, will be available to play for the Sixers after the Ashes series concludes on January 8, provided he maintains his fitness.
His decision to step away from international T20s has opened up a window for him to participate in the latter half of the BBL tournament. Starc’s previous tenure with the Sixers dates back to the 2014 season, where he impressively claimed 20 wickets in just 10 matches throughout his Big Bash League career.
Expressing his excitement, Starc stated, “I can’t wait to don the Sixers’ vibrant magenta kit for BBL|15. I’ve maintained a strong connection with the club over the last decade, and if all goes to plan, I’m thrilled to be back on the field this summer. The Sixers hold a special place in my heart, and I cherish the memories of our BBL|01 and Champions League successes. My primary goal is to help bring another championship home to our dedicated fans.”
Starc’s legacy with the Sixers began in the inaugural BBL season, where he played a crucial role in their championship victory over the Perth Scorchers in six appearances. His influence wasn’t limited to the BBL; he also led the wicket-taking charts during the Sixers’ triumphant Champions League campaign in 2012.
This signing is facilitated by the BBL’s supplementary player system, designed to allow teams to incorporate Cricket Australia contracted players with limited availability without occupying a standard spot in their 18-man squads. Each BBL franchise is permitted two such supplementary positions.
Rachael Haynes, the General Manager of Sydney Sixers, conveyed her excitement about securing Starc’s services. “Mitch’s ability to take wickets with both the new and old ball is unparalleled, and we believe he will be instrumental in our quest for the finals,” Haynes remarked. “Even during his absence from playing in recent years, Mitch has been an excellent ambassador for the club, and we eagerly anticipate his leadership contributing significantly both on and off the field in BBL|15.”
