Cricket enthusiasts, get ready for a major comeback! Australian pace sensation Mitchell Starc is making a grand return to the Big Bash League (BBL) after an impressive eleven-year absence. He’s officially signed with his former team, the Sydney Sixers, for the upcoming 2025-26 season, which is scheduled to run from December 14th to January 25th.

Starc, who recently announced his retirement from T20 International cricket, will become available for the Sixers after the Ashes series concludes on January 8th, provided he maintains full fitness. This strategic decision creates a valuable opportunity for him to feature prominently in the crucial latter stages of Australia’s premier domestic T20 competition.
The veteran bowler boasts a rich history with the Sydney Sixers. His last appearance for the club was back in the 2014 season, a period where he showcased his formidable talent by claiming 20 wickets in just 10 games throughout his entire BBL career. His deep connection with the team traces back to the inaugural BBL season, where he was instrumental in leading the Sixers to a memorable championship victory over the Perth Scorchers.
Starc’s impact extended beyond domestic triumphs; he also emerged as the leading wicket-taker during the Sixers’ successful Champions League campaign in 2012, further solidifying his legacy with the club.
Expressing his excitement about rejoining the magenta army, Starc shared in a statement, “I simply cannot wait to pull on the Sixers’ vibrant magenta playing shirt again in BBL|15! Over the past decade, I’ve maintained a strong connection with the club and, with everything going to plan, I’m absolutely thrilled to be back on the field this summer. The Sixers hold a truly special place in my heart, and I cherish the incredible memories of our BBL|01 and Champions League successes. My ultimate goal is to contribute to bringing another coveted trophy home to our passionate fans.”
This significant signing is facilitated by the BBL’s innovative supplementary player system. This system allows Cricket Australia-contracted players, who might have limited availability due to national commitments, to join teams without occupying one of the primary spots in their 18-man squads. Each BBL franchise is allocated two such supplementary positions, making Starc’s return a substantial boost for the Sixers.
Rachael Haynes, the General Manager for Sydney Sixers, conveyed her immense enthusiasm regarding Starc’s acquisition for the upcoming season. “Mitch’s explosive strike power with both the new ball and at the death is genuinely unmatched, and we are incredibly hopeful that his presence will be pivotal in our drive towards the finals,” Haynes stated. “Even during his time away from playing in recent years, Mitch has consistently proven himself to be a fantastic ambassador for the club, and we eagerly anticipate his leadership, both on and off the pitch, in BBL|15.”
