New Zealand is set to face Australia in the highly anticipated Chappell-Hadlee Trophy T20I series, but they will do so without their regular captain, Mitchell Santner. Santner is currently recovering from abdominal surgery and is expected to make his return during the tour of England later this month.
In his absence, Michael Bracewell, who has previously captained the Black Caps in 10 T20 Internationals, including a dominant 4-1 series victory over Pakistan earlier this year, will take the leadership reins.
The squad sees the notable return of pace bowlers Kyle Jamieson and Ben Sears. Jamieson rejoins the team after missing the Zimbabwe tour to be with his family for the birth of his first child, while Sears has recovered from a side strain. They will strengthen the seam attack alongside Matt Henry, world No.1 T20I bowler Jacob Duffy, and Zak Foulkes.
Young batting talent Bevon Jacobs has retained his spot after an impressive unbeaten 44-run debut against South Africa. Devon Conway, initially brought in as injury cover in Zimbabwe, also remains with the squad. Tim Seifert will continue his role as wicketkeeper, following a record-breaking hundred in the Caribbean Premier League for St Lucia Kings. Tim Robinson is also rewarded for his Player-of-the-Match performance in the tri-series against South Africa.
Ish Sodhi is slated to lead the spin bowling department. However, the team will still be without several experienced players, as Finn Allen, Adam Milne, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, and Lockie Ferguson are all recovering from various injuries. Additionally, Kane Williamson, who has a casual playing agreement with New Zealand Cricket, has opted out of this series.
The three-match T20I series is scheduled to be played at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, with matches taking place on October 1, 3, and 4.
