In a stellar performance, India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, officially cemented his place in the history books on Thursday. During the ongoing opening Test against West Indies in Ahmedabad, Bumrah became the quickest Indian bowler to reach 50 Test wickets on home ground, accomplishing this remarkable feat in merely 1,747 deliveries.

Bumrah’s contribution was pivotal, as he finished with impressive figures of 3 for 42. His crucial wickets included Justin Greaves, the West Indies’ highest scorer with 32 runs, and opener John Campbell, whose dismissal was secured via a successful DRS review after an initial not-out decision.

This achievement also puts Bumrah on par with legendary pacer Javagal Srinath, both reaching the 50-wicket milestone on home soil in just 24 innings. They now stand ahead of Kapil Dev (25 innings) and the duo of Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami (27 innings each) in this esteemed category.

Fastest Indian pacers to 50 home Test wickets (by innings):

  • Jasprit Bumrah – 24 innings
  • Javagal Srinath – 24 innings
  • Kapil Dev – 25 innings
  • Ishant Sharma – 27 innings
  • Mohammed Shami – 27 innings

Meanwhile, fellow pace bowler Mohammed Siraj maintained his exceptional form, spearheading the attack with outstanding figures of 4 for 40. This performance further boosted his impressive wicket tally for 2025 to 27. Siraj wreaked havoc on the West Indies’ top order, notably dismissing Tagenarine Chanderpaul for a duck and later sending Brandon King back to the pavilion.

Spinner Kuldeep Yadav also made a significant impact, securing two crucial wickets, including the dismissal of Shai Hope for 26, effectively breaking a resilient fifth-wicket partnership with captain Roston Chase.

Already hampered by injuries to key players Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph, the West Indies batting lineup faltered dramatically, being bowled out in just 44.1 overs. This dismal performance highlights the ongoing struggles of a team that once commanded respect globally, having suffered another cheap dismissal after their shocking collapse for 27 against Australia earlier in the year.

With Jasprit Bumrah’s historic milestone and Mohammed Siraj’s relentless form, India has undoubtedly established a dominant position, poised to take a strong lead in this two-match Test series.
