Team India’s bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has provided crucial updates on the fitness of all-rounder Hardik Pandya and opener Abhishek Sharma. These updates come ahead of their highly anticipated Asia Cup final clash against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium this Sunday.
During the recent match against Sri Lanka, both players had to leave the field, sparking injury concerns. Hardik Pandya, who even managed to pick up a wicket in the first over of Sri Lanka’s innings, did not return to the game. Similarly, Abhishek Sharma, after an impressive 31-ball 61 with the bat, also exited the pitch in the 9.2 over.
“Both Hardik and Abhishek were struggling with cramps during the game,” Morkel informed reporters. He clarified that Hardik’s condition would be assessed thoroughly tonight and tomorrow morning to make a final decision, while reassuring that Abhishek is “fine.”
The match against Sri Lanka was a thrilling encounter, with India ultimately securing a victory in a Super Over, maintaining their unbeaten streak in the tournament. Morkel viewed this intense game as a valuable “wake-up call” for the squad, acknowledging that the team hasn’t yet delivered a “complete game” in the tournament.
He emphasized the need for collective improvement: “After every game, we have discussions on areas we need to sharpen. From a batting perspective, we need better strike rotation in tough conditions, harder running between the wickets, and protecting partnerships. For our bowlers, the focus is on refining lengths, accuracy, and decision-making in the initial 10 overs, along with smarter use of variations like the yorker in the middle phases.”
Morkel also highlighted fielding as an area for improvement. “In the field, we’ve dedicated effort to catching under lights, so perhaps it’s a matter of confidence. Across all departments, there’s still significant work to be done. We understand we are by no means the finished article,” he added.
Looking ahead to the final, Morkel disclosed the team’s recovery strategy: “The key for the boys is to prioritize rest. They are already utilizing ice baths, and recovery efforts began immediately after the match. The most effective way to recover is through adequate sleep and staying off their feet. There will be pool sessions and massages to ensure they are mentally primed for Sunday’s crucial battle. It’s a quick turnaround, so playing smart will be paramount, and there will certainly be no training sessions.”
