NEW DELHI: The Indian cricket team has accomplished a monumental batting record in Test cricket, a feat last seen over six decades ago. For the first time in 64 years and 10 months, India successfully registered partnerships exceeding 50 runs for each of the first five wickets in a single Test innings.

This extraordinary collective batting display has only been achieved twice before by India: first against England in Mumbai in 1993, and more recently against Australia in Ahmedabad in 2023. Interestingly, the last time an opposing team managed this against West Indies was in 1960, during the iconic tied Test match at the Gabba against Australia.
The record-breaking performance unfolded during the second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, where India’s captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bat first. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal set a formidable tone with a magnificent 175 runs, eventually dismissed by a run-out. KL Rahul contributed a brisk 38, while Sai Sudharsan narrowly missed a century, scoring a commendable 87. Anchoring the innings brilliantly, Shubman Gill remained unbeaten on 129, marking his 10th Test century.
This stellar batting effort further solidified India’s commanding position in the series, following their emphatic innings and 140-run victory in the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Since 2013, Indian batters have dominated the India vs West Indies Test series, scoring 23 out of the 25 centuries recorded in their last 14 encounters, with Roston Chase being the only West Indies player to reach three figures twice during this period.
