Pakistani fast bowler Haris Rauf found himself at the center of a storm during a crucial Asia Cup Super 4s match against India in Dubai. On Sunday, Rauf was seen making highly contentious gestures, including motions resembling fighter jet crashes and a ‘6-0’ signal directed at Indian fans. These actions, which occurred twice – notably after dismissing Indian batsman Sanju Samson – have ignited widespread criticism and calls for a boycott from angry spectators.
The incident has fueled already existing tensions, with many perceiving it as Pakistan’s cricket team intertwining military conflicts with the sport. Rauf’s gestures reportedly referenced unverified claims circulated by Pakistani media about downing six Indian fighter jets during ‘Operation Sindoor’.
Sanju Samson, who contributed 13 runs from 17 balls, was bowled by Rauf in the 17th over. While India ultimately secured a victory in the match, Rauf’s on-field conduct has garnered heavy condemnation across social media platforms. Pakistan’s captain, Salman Agha, attempted to steer focus towards the team’s performance, stating in the post-match conference, “The batting was a lot better today, and that’s a positive.” He acknowledged the team’s strong start but noted difficulties once the ball softened after ten overs.
Agha also candidly addressed their team’s shortcomings: “To win, you have to excel in all three facets of the game. We didn’t field well or start well with the ball.” He emphasized the importance of looking ahead to their next game against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, with hopes for a better outcome.
