NEW DELHI: Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir recently issued a powerful declaration of support for Shubman Gill, stating his readiness to absorb all criticism to shield the young captain.
Gill stepped into the Test captaincy role after Rohit Sharma’s retirement, skillfully leading India to a hard-fought 2-2 draw in a challenging five-match series. His leadership prowess was further highlighted when he served as vice-captain for the T20I side in the Asia Cup, guiding India to a triumphant victory over Pakistan in the final match.
Most recently, Gill was appointed as India’s ODI captain, ahead of the upcoming series against Australia, scheduled to commence on October 19.
Reflecting on Gill’s burgeoning leadership, Gambhir shared his perspective on Star Sports: “He’s a one-day captain, and I’m keen to observe how he responds when circumstances aren’t in his favor, both personally and from the team’s perspective. My consistent message to him has been clear: I am here to support him, back him, and ultimately, to protect him.”
“My primary responsibility is to alleviate pressure from him. I am fully prepared to face any criticism directed his way, provided he consistently acts in the best interest of the team, maintaining complete transparency and honesty with all players in the dressing room. This is the bedrock of earning true respect,” Gambhir elaborated.
He concluded by praising Gill’s performance thus far: “To date, he has been nothing short of brilliant. He is transparent, direct, communicates effectively, executes his duties flawlessly, and demonstrates immense dedication. He has fulfilled every expectation. What more could a coach possibly desire from a captain who embodies these qualities and is willing to give his all?”
