Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has launched a strong critique against coach Gautam Gambhir, directly accusing him of fostering an atmosphere that compelled prominent players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin to retire prematurely.
Tiwary emphasized that senior players such as Ashwin and Rohit, with their extensive experience and established stature, are far more influential than any head coach or support staff. According to Tiwary, these seasoned cricketers would naturally voice concerns if they disagreed with certain decisions. He suggests that Gambhir deliberately ensured these players were no longer part of the team setup.
“I have observed that since this coach took on the role, a lot of controversies have arisen. Many things that are happening are not good for Indian cricket,” Tiwary stated. He highlighted the departures of Ashwin, Rohit, and Virat under Gambhir’s tenure. Tiwary also pointed to inconsistencies, such as players being unexpectedly drafted into the squad and immediately placed in the starting XI, implying a lack of transparency or fair process.
Tiwary firmly believes that the prevailing circumstances and the intense pressure created by Gambhir’s coaching style have had a profound effect on these celebrated cricketers. He underscored Rohit and Virat’s immense contributions, calling them “outstanding servants of Indian cricket” who have elevated the sport to unprecedented heights by dedicating their heart and soul.
He speculated that if these dedicated players perceive their image being tarnished or feel unwanted within the dressing room, they might be driven to consider retiring. Tiwary expressed his conviction that the players genuinely wish to continue playing.
“I think Gambhir won’t take such a big call of not having these two individuals because, in the white-ball format, no one can deny the fact that these two have been outstanding. It would be a really poor decision if Gautam doesn’t include these two in the scheme of things for the World Cup,” Tiwary remarked, questioning any potential exclusion of these stalwarts from future World Cup plans.
It is noteworthy that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently part of India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against Australia, with Shubman Gill stepping in as captain for Rohit Sharma in that series.
