This incredible venture is known as PAADI – the Pokkali Aqua Agritourism Destination Initiative. More than just a tour, it’s a comprehensive experiential package designed to highlight Pokkali farming and various other village activities. A collaborative effort between the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the Palliyakkal Service Co-operative Bank (PSCB), PAADI aims to offer travelers an unparalleled insight into the unique agricultural practices and multifaceted village life of Ezhikkara panchayat.
“Our primary goal is to introduce tourists to the distinctive Pokkali farming technique, a truly indigenous and unique system that integrates both rice and prawn cultivation,” explains DTPC secretary Lijo Joseph. “Visitors will have the chance to engage directly with these farming methods, adapting their participation to the current season. For example, those visiting during this period can join in the exciting harvest activities.”

This thoughtfully designed package features a captivating walking tour that uses a storytelling approach to educate visitors. You’ll delve into the history, significance, and intricate cultivation methods of Pokkali farming, getting a real feel for the agricultural process. “Ezhikkara stands out as a prime hub for Pokkali cultivation,” Joseph notes. “Beyond the fields, guests will discover authentic village life and savor a diverse array of traditional local cuisines. We’ve partnered with local farmers who are excited to welcome and host our travelers.”
To ensure an authentic and high-quality experience, local residents have undergone specialized training. An official from the bank emphasizes the dual mission: “Our aim is not only to revive the traditional Pokkali farming practices but also to uplift local farmers by seamlessly integrating tourism with their agricultural livelihoods.”
