Our recent hands-on experience with the latest preview build confirms this isn’t just a rehash; it’s a thoughtfully crafted reimagining that captures the essence of what fans adore, while brilliantly embracing the fresh possibilities that only a true 3D environment can provide.

For the uninitiated, Super Meat Boy is a lightning-fast platformer where you guide a skinless protagonist on a quest to rescue his girlfriend – Bandage Girl – from the perpetually grumpy Dr. Fetus (yes, a literal fetus in a jar). While the original 2010 classic and its 2020 sequel were infamous for their unforgiving, death-defying speed, this 3D iteration feels surprisingly more relaxed in its initial stages. It still offers plenty of brutal challenges for those craving the series’ hardcore platforming roots, but it appears to be more accessible to new players.

Diving into the Steam preview build, we were greeted by an impressive and functional menu. A quick button press plunges you into the action, but take a moment to explore, and you’ll find extensive accessibility features and flexible graphics settings. A particularly neat addition is the ‘ground distance helper,’ which projects your landing spot mid-air. There’s also a ‘replay character slider’ – imagine watching your successful run accompanied by up to a hundred ghostly versions of your previous, failed attempts! It’s quite the spectacle.

Controlling Meat Boy in 3D is remarkably fluid. Using an Xbox controller, every action—jumping, sprinting, wall-running, and dashing—feels crisp and accurate. While Meat Boy has a slightly airy feel mid-jump, a handy mid-air dash (mapped to X) provides essential mid-course corrections, crucial for navigating complex 3D environments. Wall-running and wall-jumping mirror the original’s wall-slides, allowing players to scale vertical surfaces. Curiously, the preview build omits the ‘punch’ ability mentioned in the control scheme and features no combat, making us wonder if enemy encounters will be part of the final game or if this remains a purely obstacle-focused platformer.

Brutal, But Fairly Fun

The level design truly shines, leveraging 3D space in ways impossible for its 2D predecessors. Expect multi-tiered structures, requiring you to jump off walls, dash over chasms, and ground-slam through vertical shafts to evade hazards like falling spike balls. The ground slam (mapped to B) is particularly effective, allowing swift descents to dodge overhead threats. Classic platformer dangers—buzz saws, bear traps, crumbling platforms, and industrial crushers—are present, alongside new physics-based puzzles, such as those involving precisely timed descents to navigate spike ball chutes.

In true series fashion, death is frequent and often gruesome. Meat Boy, being a cube of exposed muscle tissue, is destined for countless splattery demises, instantly respawning at the start of each level with the timer reset. The crimson trails he leaves behind paint increasingly morbid, yet darkly comical, patterns across the otherwise vibrant environments, turning pristine grassy fields into unexpected crime scenes. The sound design complements this perfectly, with squelchy, splattery audio reminiscent of Splatoon‘s ink mechanics, while the whirring of saw blades and grinding of crushers craft a wonderfully cartoony, yet menacing, audio backdrop.

Replay Review

Your performance is judged solely on completion time and death count, with letter grades given for how quickly you clear each level. Achieving an A+ rank means finishing under a target time with zero deaths—a demanding task requiring memorization and flawless execution. There’s no score, no currency, just you against the clock and your own mortality. We did find hidden collectible band-aids behind destructible wooden walls, but their purpose in the final game—whether for unlocking content, costumes, or bonus levels—remains a mystery.

One of the preview’s most entertaining features is the post-level replay system. After a successful run, you get to watch it back, accompanied by dozens of ghostly Meat Boys reliving their countless, often comical, failed attempts before one finally mirrors your perfect path. It’s both satisfying and hilarious, turning every victory into a grand spectacle of past failures. You can even adjust the ‘max replay characters’ setting to fill the screen with even more doomed meat cubes!

Unanswered Questions

The full scope of the game remains somewhat shrouded in mystery. The preview build didn’t feature any boss fights (though a cutscene hinted at a giant robot), no multiplayer modes, and a locked ‘theater mode.’ The familiar narrative — Dr. Fetus once again snatching someone precious to Meat Boy, likely Bandage Girl given her pink hue — suggests a return to established story themes, though the series has never been plot-heavy, and this 3D installment seems to follow suit. While the linear level design and minimal exploration might disappoint those hoping for Metroidvania-style progression, this approach aligns with Super Meat Boy’s core identity: pure, unadulterated platforming challenges.

Super Meat Boy 3D offers a challenging yet enjoyable gameplay loop that effortlessly guides you into a zen-like flow state, especially once you embrace its trial-and-error approach. It feels like a perfect ‘podcast game’ – something you can unwind with while engaging in other activities. After multiple runs through the preview, we realized it would be an excellent fit for Steam Deck players looking for quick, satisfying sessions before bed. This isn’t a critique; there’s undeniable value in games that don’t demand your full emotional bandwidth, and this is certainly one of them. Though it’s a minor disappointment there’s no Switch 2 version confirmed yet – just kidding!

Under the Hood

While challenging, the initial difficulty in this preview didn’t quite reach the soul-crushing levels the series is known for. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it could attract a broader player base, but we hope the final version still offers plenty of intense challenges for long-time fans. It remains to be seen if later worlds will ramp up the difficulty or if Team Meat has opted for a generally softer approach for wider appeal – we’re definitely rooting for the former.

Visually, Super Meat Boy 3D achieves a beautiful balance between its signature cartoonish aesthetic and modern rendering. The game promises a more atmospheric experience as levels unfold, with the preview build already offering extensive graphics options like various anti-aliasing methods, post-processing effects, shadow quality, global illumination, reflections, and foliage density. Even with DLSS unavailable in our build, the game ran flawlessly at nearly 144fps on an RTX 4070Ti, demonstrating impressive optimization even at max settings on an ultrawide 3440×1440 display. Environments burst with character: tranquil grassy areas evolve into fiery forests with saws embedded in scorched trees, then shift to grim industrial zones brimming with crushers, spike traps, and toxic waste. This keeps the original’s high-contrast, nightmare-storybook vibe intact, but with an added geometric complexity and detail only achievable in 3D.

Unique Flavor of Platforming

Comparisons to other contemporary 3D platformers are unavoidable, though perhaps slightly unfair given Super Meat Boy 3D’s distinct focus. It doesn’t aim for the inventive kinetic mechanics and character-driven charm of Astro Bot, the expansive freedom of Mario Odyssey, or even the diverse level design of Crash Bandicoot 4. Instead, it feels more like a streamlined blend of Ghost Runner‘s fast-paced, retry-focused philosophy with the geometric verticality and visual style of Pac-Man World II. Imagine a tightly packaged, brutal platforming experience, devoid of collectibles or extraneous mechanics – just pure, refined challenge. This reinvention handles it all smoothly enough to remain deeply satisfying, even after repeated plays through the preview content.

With each attempt, your skills will sharpen, leading to more coveted A+ ranks as your muscle memory hones. The addictive ‘just one more try’ mantra that defined the original is undeniably alive and well here. The crucial question is whether Team Meat can maintain this momentum throughout the full game, and if there will be enough content, variety, and unexpected delights to truly justify this bold leap into three dimensions.

In summary, Super Meat Boy 3D is a promising new chapter, effectively translating the series’ dark humor and challenging gameplay into a 3D space. It boasts responsive controls, excellent performance, and level designs that expertly utilize verticality while preserving the addictive challenge loops that made the original a classic. However, as of this preview, several significant questions linger: the ultimate scope of its content, the implementation of combat, the purpose of hidden collectibles, and whether this tightly focused formula can remain engaging throughout an entire game.
