Indian cricket icon Ravichandran Ashwin, describing his post-IPL career as the start of a journey to “explore the game across leagues,” is on the verge of joining the International League T20 (ILT20).
Speaking exclusively from Dubai, ILT20 CEO David White confirmed the league is engaged in “very positive conversations” with Ashwin, expressing optimism for a favorable outcome soon. “Having a player of his caliber would be immense. He is a world-class, generational talent, boasting over 500 Test wickets and an exceptional career in ODIs and T20Is. His cricket brain is unparalleled, making him a charismatic and intelligent figure in the sport. We would be absolutely thrilled if he joins the ILT20,” White enthusiastically stated.
The legendary off-spinner has openly discussed his interest in dual roles, combining playing responsibilities with coaching duties. When asked about the ILT20’s openness to such a dynamic position, White affirmed, “We are very receptive to any such arrangement. Beyond his playing and coaching contributions, his analytical prowess is also highly valued. He’s a very sharp individual, even running his own media company. We would embrace all aspects of his involvement.”
White conveyed strong confidence that Ashwin will indeed feature in the ILT20, adding, “We are hopeful of securing him. Let’s await the official announcement, but we are very positive about this prospect.”
Just last month, Ashwin officially concluded his illustrious journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL), signalling his intent to explore opportunities in various T20 leagues worldwide. He shared this new chapter on platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A special day marks a special beginning. They say every ending has a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer concludes today, but my role as an explorer of the game across different leagues begins now.”
Ashwin finished his IPL career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker, claiming 187 wickets in 221 matches with an impressive economy rate of 7.2. On his YouTube channel, he elaborated, “Of course, I won’t be playing everywhere for 10 months. I’ll participate in leagues that align with my skills and the team’s requirements. I’ve already registered for one, so let’s see how things unfold.”
