Cricket Legends Hail Rohit Sharma Amid Shubman Gill’s New ODI Captaincy: The Dhoni Comparison

In a significant development, Indian selectors announced on Saturday that young talent Shubman Gill would take over the ODI captaincy from Rohit Sharma for the upcoming series against Australia. This decision is widely viewed as a strategic step in India’s long-term preparations for the 2027 World Cup.

Despite this leadership change, Rohit Sharma, a two-time ICC trophy winner and one of only two captains (the other being Mahendra Singh Dhoni) to lead India to three ICC white-ball finals, remains a key player in the 15-member ODI squad, alongside veteran Virat Kohli. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain for the three-match ODI series, set to be played in Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne from October 19 to 25. This will be followed by a five-match T20 series.

Even with the change in leadership, Rohit’s legacy as a shrewd tactician and an inspiring motivator continues to garner widespread acclaim. Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag, speaking to Cricbuzz, hailed him as “the second-best captain after Dhoni.” Sehwag elaborated, “People tend to underestimate his captaincy, but after securing these two trophies, he has perhaps earned the title of the second-best captain after MS Dhoni. He prioritizes his team and teammates over himself, ensuring they feel comfortable. He understands that insecurity can hinder a player’s performance, which is why he goes to great lengths to make everyone feel secure and integrated within the team.”

Former pace spearhead Zaheer Khan reinforced this sentiment, highlighting Rohit’s invaluable experience and composure under pressure. “Winning trophies is a powerful motivator, and his extensive experience in such high-stakes situations clearly shines through,” Khan observed. “Whether it’s multi-nation tournaments or franchise cricket, his approach—understanding what needs to be done, effective communication, and meticulous preparation—is consistently reflected in his demeanor. Moreover, his blend of intensity and a surprisingly casual approach seems to work remarkably well for him.”

Adding to the chorus of praise, Murali Kartik emphasized Rohit’s consistent ability to earn the trust of his teammates. “He never loses the dressing room,” Kartik stated. “Players are naturally drawn to Rohit Sharma because he genuinely advocates for giving them opportunities, publicly acknowledges their contributions in press conferences, and has steadfastly upheld this philosophy throughout his captaincy.”

As the Indian team gears up for their tour of Australia, Rohit Sharma continues to be a pivotal presence within the squad. His vast experience will now complement the fresh leadership of Shubman Gill, marking an exciting period of both continuity and transition for Team India’s white-ball cricket future.
