Beth Mooney delivered a batting masterclass to single-handedly rescue Australia from a perilous position, ultimately guiding them to a commanding 107-run victory over Pakistan in their ICC Women’s World Cup clash in Colombo.
After being asked to bat first, the reigning champions faced a shocking top-order collapse, finding themselves in deep trouble at 76 for 7 within 22 overs. Pakistan’s spinners, notably Nashra Sandhu who claimed 3/37, had seized control of the game.
However, Mooney, demonstrating incredible composure under pressure, orchestrated a remarkable turnaround. Her brilliant 109 runs off 114 balls marked her fifth ODI hundred and her maiden World Cup century.

She found an unexpected and crucial partner in Alana King, who smashed an unbeaten 51 off just 49 balls. Together, this dynamic duo forged a record 106-run partnership for the ninth wicket, the highest ever for that wicket or lower in women’s ODIs. This heroic stand elevated Australia to a challenging total of 221 for 9.
Australia’s bowlers then completed the dominant performance with a ruthless display. Kim Garth (3/14), Annabel Sutherland (2/15), and Megan Schutt (2/25) systematically dismantled Pakistan’s batting lineup, bowling them out for a mere 114 runs in just 36.3 overs.
Pakistan’s chase never gained momentum, as they were quickly reduced to a dismal 31 for 5 inside nine overs. Garth initiated the collapse by removing opener Sadaf Shamas (5) before Schutt joined in to wreak havoc.
Sidra Amin (35) attempted to hold the innings together but fought a lone battle as wickets continued to tumble around her. Once she departed in the 22nd over, Pakistan’s resistance crumbled completely.
Earlier, Australia’s innings had initially looked destined for a full collapse due to poor shot selection and sharp Pakistani fielding, leaving them reeling at 60 for 5. Key batters like Alyssa Healy, Phoebe Litchfield, and Ellyse Perry all fell cheaply as Sandhu and Rameen Shamim (2/29) expertly exploited the turning pitch.
However, Mooney remained steadfast amidst the chaos, expertly anchoring the innings with precise strokeplay and impeccable shot selection. Her crucial partnership with King not only saved Australia from embarrassment but also established a target that proved insurmountable for Pakistan.
This victory keeps Australia’s perfect record intact, following their opening win against New Zealand, with an earlier match against Sri Lanka being washed out. For Pakistan, this marked their third consecutive defeat, having previously lost to India and Bangladesh, leaving them at the bottom of the table.
