In a surprising turn of events, it has been revealed that ICC match referee Andy Pycroft might be ‘rested’ for the upcoming Asia Cup clash between Pakistan and UAE in Dubai. Sources indicate that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was resolute in its demand for Pycroft’s removal from the entire tournament, and while a full dismissal seems unlikely, he is expected to be absent from today’s game.
The PCB had previously threatened to pull out of the tournament, squarely blaming Pycroft for the ‘no-handshake’ controversy that erupted after their match against India. Adding to the tension, Pakistan also cancelled their pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s fixture.
A PCB source confirmed, “Pakistan will participate in the tournament, but Andy Pycroft will not be officiating the match against the UAE.” It remains uncertain whether Pycroft will return for Pakistan’s subsequent matches, as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has yet to provide a definitive response.
“The PCB has formally complained to the ICC regarding violations by the Match Referee of the ICC Code of Conduct and the MCC Laws pertaining to the Spirit of Cricket. The PCB has demanded an immediate removal of the Match Referee from the Asia Cup,” a statement from Naqvi, who also serves as the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), had initially stated in a social media post, which was later deleted.
Pycroft boasts an extensive career, having officiated over 100 Tests. He has been at the center of several high-profile incidents, including the ball-tampering saga involving Steve Smith, Virat Kohli’s on-field clash with Sam Konstas, and Jos Buttler’s fiery exchange with Vernon Philander.
Though his international playing career for Zimbabwe was brief—three Tests and 20 ODIs—Pycroft made his Test debut against India in Harare, scoring 39 and 46. He also featured in the memorable 1983 World Cup match where Kapil Dev famously scored 175 runs.
Both India and Pakistan held separate training sessions at the ICC Academy on Tuesday, sharing the venue for approximately an hour. India has already secured its spot in the Super Four stage. Pakistan, on the other hand, faces a crucial must-win game against hosts UAE today. Should they emerge victorious, another highly anticipated encounter against India awaits them on Sunday.
