Behind his consistent smile, left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh openly shared his disappointment about not receiving more consistent opportunities to play for India.
The 26-year-old found himself on the sidelines during the Champions Trophy, the subsequent five-match Test series in England, and most recently, the Asia Cup (played in T20I format). Despite being India’s top wicket-taker in T20Is and even earning the ICC T20I Player of the Year award, he participated in only two matches. The main reason cited for his exclusion has been the team’s strategy, which favors players who can contribute with the bat, leading to a perceived preference for batting all-rounders.
“All-rounders are highly valued these days,” Arshdeep quipped during an interview on ‘Breakfast with Champions.’ He added with a playful hint, “I am a pinch-hitter; I hit big shots. If my captain is listening…”
Arshdeep also took the opportunity to emphasize the profound importance of Test cricket.
“Test cricket earns you respect at a different level,” he stated.
He elaborated, “People might remember that you played 50 T20Is, but when you play Test cricket, they remember that in 1992, someone bowled a brilliant four-over spell, even if they didn’t take a wicket.”
He urged a renewed focus on the traditional format: “Focus should be on red-ball cricket as well. Right now, everyone wants fame, money, and to play in the IPL, but the enthusiasm for red-ball cricket is diminishing. Play T20s, play one-dayers, but the true joy of red-ball cricket… after bowling 20 overs, finding where all the aches and pains come from is a different kind of pleasure. While taking a hot shower after the day’s play, when you realize your neck is tight and hamstrings are tight – that feeling is truly unique.”
Recalling his recent participation in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Arshdeep remarked, “I just experienced it; I played Test cricket. Watching from outside is different, but actually playing it reveals how much effort and mental toughness are truly required.”
