India leveled the T20I series against Australia 1-1 after securing a thrilling five-wicket victory in Hobart on Sunday. This crucial win was largely fueled by an explosive late batting performance from Washington Sundar and excellent bowling, particularly from Arshdeep Singh.
Chasing a target of 187, India found themselves in a challenging spot at 145 for five in the 15th over. However, Washington Sundar stepped up with an unbeaten 49 runs off just 23 balls, featuring three fours and four sixes, completely shifting the momentum in India’s favor. Jitesh Sharma also played a vital supporting role, chipping in with 22* off 13 balls to guide India comfortably across the finish line.
Earlier in the match, Arshdeep Singh was instrumental in breaking through Australia’s batting lineup, taking three wickets for 35 runs. His efforts, combined with Jasprit Bumrah’s tight bowling from the other end, helped restrict the hosts. Australia had managed to post 186 for six, largely due to strong contributions from Marcus Stoinis (64) and Tim David (74).
Following the impressive win, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav commended his team’s composure under pressure and highlighted the strong balance of the playing XI. He specifically praised Washington Sundar’s flexibility in the lower batting order and acknowledged the bowling unit’s effective execution of their strategies.
“Winning the toss was important today, and I am really happy with how the team performed. Washi (Washington Sundar) showed great flexibility, Jitesh contributed well, and Arshdeep was outstanding. It felt like the right combination tonight,” Suryakumar stated after the match. He further praised the pairing of Bumrah and Arshdeep, describing it as a well-balanced and highly effective combination.
“Yes, they are a fantastic pair — a bit like Shubman and Abhishek up top. Bumrah does his job quietly, keeps it tight, and Arshdeep capitalizes from the other end. Together, they are a really lethal combination,” the skipper added, emphasizing their complementary styles.
Arshdeep, who was making his return to the playing XI after being rested for the first two T20Is, shared insights into his clear bowling approach and how bowling alongside a seasoned pro like Bumrah benefits him. “When someone like Bumrah is bowling from the other end, batters often take more risks against me, which gives me wicket-taking opportunities. I just try to enjoy my bowling and keep my plans simple,” Arshdeep explained. “No matter the situation — powerplay or death — I just focus on execution and stick to what I have practiced.”
With the series now evenly poised at 1-1, both teams are set to move to a new venue for the remaining two matches, promising more exciting cricket action.
