The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a ‘cyclone alert’ for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This warning comes as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen significantly starting October 21, 2025, according to officials on Monday, October 20, 2025.
In response to this developing weather system, authorities have issued local port warnings. Heavy rainfall is anticipated to continue until October 23, prompting concerns for the region.
An official stated that the Nicobar Islands are likely to experience heavy rainfall, ranging from 7 to 11 cm, in isolated areas. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands should also prepare for thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, along with lightning, between October 21 and October 23.
Furthermore, squally weather is expected across the Andaman Sea from October 22 to October 23, with surface wind speeds potentially hitting 35-45 kmph and gusting up to 55 kmph. Due to these rough sea conditions, fishermen have been strongly cautioned against venturing into the Andaman Sea and off the Andaman and Nicobar coast until October 24, affecting fishing activities for the next five days.
Given the potential for dangerously high waves, the administration has urged boat owners, local residents, and tourists to exercise extreme caution when operating vessels. All recreational activities on the water should be conducted with the utmost care.
Both tourists and the general public are advised to steer clear of the sea and adhere strictly to all safety guidelines issued by local authorities to ensure their well-being.
