Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma has finally disclosed the meaning behind his widely discussed ‘L’ celebration, which captivated fans during India’s impressive six-wicket triumph over Pakistan in the Asia Cup Super Four clash in Dubai. The young batsman delivered an electrifying performance, smashing 74 runs off just 39 deliveries, relentlessly attacking Pakistan’s bowling and setting the stage for India’s comfortable chase of a 172-run target.
His blistering innings included a 24-ball half-century, which also stands as the fastest by an Indian player against Pakistan, setting a dominant tone at the Dubai International Stadium. After reaching his fifty, Abhishek blew kisses towards the stands where his family was seated, before raising his hand to form the distinctive ‘L’ gesture. This unique celebration immediately sparked curiosity, leading to widespread speculation among fans.
Post-match, in a video shared by the BCCI, Abhishek clarified the sentiment behind his gesture to captain Suryakumar Yadav. “This is love, it is a celebration for those who support the Indian team. This is for India,” he explained.
The 25-year-old further shared that having his family in attendance made the evening even more memorable. “It is very special because I feel their record is going very well for me. Whenever they come, we have won the game one-sidedly. Even today, we won the contest one-sidedly. It is a special feeling when family members come,” he remarked.
During his conversation with the captain, Abhishek also drew a touching personal parallel between his performance and his father, Raj Kumar Sharma. “Today I remembered my dad because of the way you were standing and saying take one run; he used to do the same, sitting in front of the sight screen. That’s where I pay the most attention to. I am used to it, and you asked me two to three times to push for a single,” Abhishek fondly recounted to Suryakumar.
Abhishek’s explosive batting display and his heartfelt celebration combined to make the night an unforgettable one for both the player and the passionate Indian supporters.
