P.M. Narendraswamy, the esteemed Chairperson of the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), recently delivered a compelling message during the board’s golden jubilee celebrations in Hassan. He underscored the critical importance of protecting our rivers from pollution, particularly by preventing the discharge of harmful effluents into these vital water bodies.
Mr. Narendraswamy highlighted that numerous factors have contributed to river pollution over the years. He issued a stern warning, stating that humanity would inevitably face dire consequences if we fail to safeguard our rivers. He urged every individual to join forces with the board in a collaborative effort to halt river pollution.
Specifically addressing the regions of Hassan and Chikkamagaluru, Mr. Narendraswamy pointed out that runoff from coffee pulper units is a significant source of water body contamination in the Malnad region. He cautioned that such pollution could tragically lead to environmental catastrophes like devastating landslips.
Tracing the history, Mr. Narendraswamy recalled that pollution control boards were initially established in 1974 under the visionary leadership of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. As the Karnataka board marks its 50th year, it is organizing various programs across the state to commemorate this milestone, simultaneously raising public awareness about conserving natural resources and preventing pollution.
Distinguished guests present at the event included T.D. Raje Gowda, MLA for Sringeri; Cement Manju, MLA for Sakleshpur; Shreyas M. Patel, MP; Madhu Made Gowda, MLC; and several KSPCB officials.
