Residents across south and central Kerala should prepare for significant rainfall over the next two days, influenced by a developing weather system in the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a bulletin on Wednesday, detailing the progression of this weather event.
Initially, an existing low-pressure area situated over north Odisha and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and Gangetic West Bengal is expected to dissipate within the next 12 hours. However, a fresh low-pressure area is predicted to form over the north and central Bay of Bengal by Thursday.
This new system is forecast to move westward, intensifying into a depression off the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts by Friday, with an anticipated landfall around September 27th. This movement is expected to considerably boost rainfall activity across Kerala for approximately three days.
In light of these predictions, a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for seven districts for Thursday: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam. These areas could experience rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour window. Furthermore, six districts will remain under a yellow alert on Friday, with five districts in north Kerala following suit on Saturday.
