NEW DELHI: Ravichandran Ashwin is gearing up for a bustling ‘second innings’ in the world of cricket, promising as much excitement as his illustrious international career. The iconic off-spinner, who recently retired from the IPL following his farewell to international cricket in 2024, is set for an impressive double role in overseas leagues. He’s slated to feature in both the ILT20 in the UAE and the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia.
A recent Cricbuzz report indicates that Ashwin has officially registered for the ILT20 auction, scheduled for October 1st. Intriguingly, several BBL franchises, including Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes, and Adelaide Strikers, have already expressed significant interest in acquiring his services.
Confirming his involvement, Ashwin stated, ‘I have registered for the auction. Hopefully, one of the six franchises will be interested in bidding for me.’
His schedule will see him kick off in the UAE with the ILT20, running from December 2nd to January 4th. Afterward, he’ll head to Australia for the BBL, which extends until January 25th. While this packed calendar means he won’t be available for the entire Australian season, his inclusion is still considered a major draw.
With his IPL retirement now behind him, Ashwin is no longer bound by BCCI restrictions, opening up possibilities to explore other international leagues such as Major League Cricket (USA) and The Hundred (UK).
Before these major league commitments, Ashwin will also represent India at the Hong Kong Sixes from November 7th to 9th, undoubtedly adding a significant boost to the team’s profile. He commented on this format, saying, ‘This format requires a different strategy and will prove to be high octane.’
Indeed, for one of India’s most celebrated spinners, the next chapter in his cricketing journey promises to be a truly global, high-profile, and action-packed adventure.
