Former Delhi captain Mithun Manhas has strongly emerged as the leading candidate for the presidency of the Indian cricket board, the BCCI. This development follows crucial discussions held in New Delhi on Saturday. The official nomination window closes on Sunday afternoon, with elections scheduled for September 28 during the board’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Since the 2019 amendment to the BCCI constitution, nominations for this top post typically proceed unopposed. The board has consistently emphasized that its leadership should come from within the cricketing fraternity.

Prior to Manhas, Sourav Ganguly and Roger Binny held the presidential role. Notably, Manhas would be the first uncapped player to lead the BCCI. He brings significant administrative experience from his time with the J&K Cricket Association (JKCA) and boasts an impressive playing career, including 157 first-class matches and stints with IPL franchises like Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors, and Chennai Super Kings. Recognized as a stalwart of Indian domestic cricket, Manhas has also previously represented the JKCA at BCCI’s Annual General Meetings.
Sources reveal that a lengthy meeting took place with key figures in Indian cricket, where all potential office-bearers were called for discussions. Former India left-arm spinner Raghuram Bhat, who currently chairs the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), is also expected to secure a position within the prestigious apex council. It is understood that Bhat’s chances for the presidency were likely affected by the fact that the previous president, Roger Binny, also represented Karnataka.
Speculation is rife regarding the continuation of current vice-president Rajeev Shukla, with some whispers suggesting that Raghuram Bhat might step into that role. Furthermore, Arun Dhumal is widely expected to retain his position as IPL chairman. A final round of crucial discussions is anticipated for Sunday morning.
