Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage is set to make a brave return to the Asia Cup squad, just days after experiencing the profound loss of his father, Suranga. Despite the personal tragedy, Wellalage is traveling back to the UAE to be available for selection for the critical Super Four fixtures, beginning with the match against Bangladesh.
The 22-year-old had flown back to Colombo on Thursday night after receiving the devastating news of his father’s passing due to a heart attack. Suranga Wellalage was 54 years old, and his demise occurred while Dunith was actively playing a Group B match against Afghanistan.

Accompanied by team manager Mahinda Halangode, Wellalage is expected to arrive in the UAE on Friday night, and will be available for selection in Sri Lanka’s opening Super Four clash against Bangladesh.
In the recent match against Afghanistan, the young left-arm spinner showcased his talent, bowling four overs and securing the crucial wicket of Ibrahim Zadran. This performance came in only his fifth T20I appearance. Sri Lanka ultimately clinched a six-wicket victory in that game, largely powered by Kusal Mendis’s unbeaten 74 runs.

The cricket community has poured out messages of support for Dunith during this challenging time. Former captain Lasith Malinga expressed his condolences on X, stating, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Suranga Wellalage, father of Dunith Wellalage. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Stay strong Dunith, the whole nation stands with you and your family in this difficult time.” Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi also conveyed his solidarity, posting, “Heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the loss of his beloved father. Stay strong brother.”
Sri Lanka’s head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, who personally informed Wellalage of the tragedy after the Afghanistan game, offered a poignant tribute in a Facebook post. He wrote, “Dunith, your father was a cricketer himself, and he can be truly proud of the son he raised. His values, his love for the game, and his spirit live on through you,” assuring the youngster of his continued support.
With upcoming Super Four matches against Bangladesh on Saturday, Pakistan on September 23, and India on September 26, Wellalage’s inclusion is a timely and welcome addition to the squad, especially after initial uncertainties surrounding his participation due to his father’s demise.
