In an incredible display of resilience and commitment, Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunith Wellalage is set to rejoin the national cricket squad for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. This brave return comes just days after he experienced the profound and heartbreaking loss of his father, Suranga.
Wellalage, aged 22, flew back to Colombo on Thursday night upon receiving the devastating news that his father, Suranga Wellalage, 54, had passed away due to a heart attack. The tragedy unfolded while Dunith was actively participating in a crucial Group B match against Afghanistan.
Despite the immense personal sorrow, Wellalage is making his way back to the UAE on Friday evening, accompanied by team manager Mahinda Halangode. He is expected to be available for selection for Sri Lanka’s opening Super Four clash against Bangladesh, as well as the subsequent matches.
The talented left-arm spinner had a notable performance in the Afghanistan match, bowling four overs and securing the key wicket of Ibrahim Zadran. Sri Lanka ultimately clinched a six-wicket victory in that game, largely driven by Kusal Mendis’ unbeaten 74 runs.
News of Suranga Wellalage’s demise prompted an outpouring of support from across the cricketing world. Former Sri Lankan captain Lasith Malinga expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Suranga Wellalage, father of Dunith Wellalage. My heartfelt condolences to the family. Stay strong Dunith, the whole nation stands with you and your family in this difficult time.”
Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi also shared his solidarity, posting, “Heartfelt condolences to Dunith Wellalage and his family on the loss of his beloved father. Stay strong brother.”
Sri Lanka’s head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, who informed Wellalage of the tragedy after the Afghanistan game, paid a touching tribute on Facebook. He wrote, “Dunith, your father was a cricketer himself, and he can be truly proud of the son he raised. His values, his love for the game, and his spirit live on through you,” assuring the young player of his ongoing support.
Wellalage’s unwavering commitment and timely return will be a vital asset for Sri Lanka as they prepare for challenging Super Four fixtures. They are scheduled to face Bangladesh on Saturday, followed by matches against Pakistan on September 23, and India on September 26. His inspiring dedication, even in the face of profound personal adversity, is expected to galvanize his teammates and resonate deeply with fans.
