NEW DELHI: Following Rohit Sharma’s remarkable performance and India’s victory in the third One-Day International against Australia, his childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, shared exciting news on Saturday: the seasoned opener intends to retire after the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Sharma recently celebrated his 50th international century in Sydney during the third ODI, where he emerged as the leading scorer in the series against Australia.
During India’s pursuit of 237 runs, Sharma’s electrifying 121 not out, coupled with his formidable partnership with long-standing teammate Virat Kohli, captivated spectators. Many in the packed stadium felt this might be their last joint appearance on Australian soil.
“The way Rohit batted today and his significant contribution to India’s victory was truly inspiring to witness,” remarked Dinesh Lad. “He is set to participate in the 2027 ODI World Cup and will retire thereafter.”
Addressing Virat Kohli, who delivered a solid 74 not out after two consecutive ducks in earlier matches, Lad acknowledged the common misunderstandings surrounding the player.
“Virat possesses an incredible ability to perform under pressure, thriving in any situation. His performance today was truly gratifying. Back in the day, Sachin Tendulkar himself predicted that Rohit and Virat would be the ones to surpass his records. Witnessing them inch closer to that milestone is incredibly satisfying,” Lad elaborated.
For his exceptional contributions, Rohit Sharma was honored as both ‘Player of the Match’ and ‘Player of the Series,’ having amassed 202 runs, including a century and a half-century, throughout the series.
Following their captivating display at the Sydney Cricket Ground – an emotional match that moved many spectators – Indian cricket icons Rohit and Virat are now slated to return for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, commencing November 30.
The three-match ODI series between India and South Africa will kick off on November 30 in Ranchi, continue with the second ODI on December 3 in Raipur, and conclude with the third and final match on December 6 in Visakhapatnam.
